First-Prize winner at the renowned International Carl Nielsen Competition in Copenhagen, the Quatuor á Bordeaux (2019), the Franz Schubert and the Music of Modernity in Graz (2018), and the International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna (2017), the Simply Quartet is continuously searching for a deep understanding of the inherent language of music: from the early classical works to modern string quartet literature. They place great emphasis on combining the three contrasting cultures upon which they draw their inspiration from (China, Austria, Norway) so that they develop a musical language of their own; by exploring works from each of their homelands, they deepen their knowledge of different sound worlds.
Originally founded in Shanghai under the auspices of Jensen Horn-Sin Lam, the Quartet moved to Vienna to intensively explore the essence and origins of quartet playing – at the Joseph Haydn Institute of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, under the tutorship of Johannes Meissl. In addition, it has enriched its experiences and skills during its tenure at the European Chamber Music Academy, and it was further influenced and inspired by Günter Pichler’s class at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, where it was a member in 2020 and 2021.
At the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Simply Quartet was selected as part of the Great Talent programme (2020-2022), and during the 2021-2022 season, they were one of the selected ensembles of the ECHO Rising Stars series with debuts at concert halls including BOZAR Brussels, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Palau de la Música Catalana, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Luxembourg and Paris Philharmonies. As German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt described their concert at the Elbphilharmonie, where they were the first string quartet to perform in the Fast Lane series, “… they put on such a breathtaking performance that at the end the audience trampled with enthusiasm.”
This season, the Simply Quartet appears for concerts at the Wigmore Hall London, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Tonhalle Zurich, as well as at the Rheingau Music Festival, the Festival International de Quatuors à Cordes du Luberon, the String Quartet Biennale in Amsterdam and the Beethovenfest Bonn.
Primarius Danfeng Shen plays a violin by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini from 1753, which is at his disposal thanks to a generous loan from MERITO String Instruments Trust GmbH. Antonia Rankersberger plays a violin by Camillo Camilli from 1736 (Mantua), made available to her by the Austrian National Bank.
Έχοντας αποσπάσει Πρώτα Βραβεία στον περίφημο Διεθνή Διαγωνισμό Καρλ Νίλσεν στην Κοπεγχάγη, στον Διαγωνισμό του Μπορντό (2019), στον Διαγωνισμό Φρανς Σούμπερτ και «Music of Modernity» στο Γκρατς (2018), και στον Διεθνή Διαγωνισμό Μουσικής Δωματίου Γιόζεφ Χάιντν στη Βιέννη (2017), το Simply Quartet βρίσκεται σε συνεχή αναζήτηση της πιο εμβριθούς νόησης της εγγενούς γλώσσας της μουσικής: από τα πρώιμα κλασικά έργα έως τη σύγχρονη εργογραφία για κουαρτέτο εγχόρδων. Το Κουαρτέτο επικεντρώνεται στο κράμα των τριών αντιπαραβαλλόμενων πολιτισμών από τους οποίους αντλούν την έμπνευσή τους (Κίνα, Αυστρία, Νορβηγία) έτσι ώστε να αναπτύξουν μια δική τους μουσική γλώσσα – εξερευνώντας έργα από την πατρίδα του κάθε ενός τους, εμβαθύνουν την γνώση τους για διαφορετικούς ηχητικούς κόσμους.
Έχοντας ιδρυθεί στη Σαγκάη υπό την αιγίδα του Jensen Horn-Sin Lam, το Simply Quartet μετοίκησε στη Βιέννη για να εξερευνήσει εντατικά την ουσία και την προέλευση της ερμηνείας για κουαρτέτο εγχόρδων – στο Ινστιτούτο Γιόζεφ Χάιντν του Πανεπιστημίου Μουσικής και Παραστατικών Τεχνών της Βιέννης, υπό την καθοδήγηση του Johannes Meissl. Επιπλέον, έχει εμπλουτίσει τις εμπειρίες και τις δεξιότητές του κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής του στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ακαδημία Μουσικής Δωματίου, και εμπνεύστηκε περαιτέρω από την τάξη του Günter Pichler στην Ανώτατη Μουσική Σχολή Βασιλίσσης Σοφίας στη Μαδρίτη, όπου ήταν μέλος κατά τις χρονιές 2020 και 2021.
Το Simply Quartet επιλέχθηκε από το Κοντσέρτχαους της Βιέννης ως μέρος του προγράμματος Μεγάλα Ταλέντα κατά τη σαιζόν 2020-2022, ενώ τη σεζόν 2021-2022 είχε επιλεγεί για τη σειρά ECHO Rising Stars, κάνοντας το ντεμπούτο του σε αίθουσες συναυλιών, όπως Μποζάρ Βρυξελλών, Κοντσερτγκεμπάου του Άμστερνταμ, Παλάτι της Καταλανικής Μουσικής στη Βαρκελώνη, Φιλαρμονική του Έλβα στο Αμβούργο, Φιλαρμονική του Λουξεμβούργου, και Φιλαρμονική του Παρισιού. Όπως περιέγραψε και η γερμανική εφημερίδα Hamburger Abendblatt κατόπιν της συναυλίας τους στη Φιλαρμονική του Έλβα, όπου οι Simply ήταν το πρώτο κουαρτέτο εγχόρδων που συμμετείχε στη σειρά Fast Lane, «… έδωσαν μια τόσο συναρπαστική ερμηνεία που στο τέλος το κοινό ποδοπατούσε με ενθουσιασμό».
Αυτή τη σεζόν, το Simply Quartet εμφανίζεται για συναυλίες στην Αίθουσα Wigmore του Λονδίνου, στο Κοντσέρτχαους του Βερολίνου, στην Παλαιά Όπερα της Φρανκφούρτης, στο Τονχάλε της Ζυρίχης, καθώς και στο Φεστιβάλ Μουσικής του Ράινγαου, Music Festival, το Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Κουαρτέτου Εγχόρδων στο Λούμπερον, τη Μπιενάλε Κουαρτέτου Εγχόρδων στο Άμστερνταμ, και στο Φεστιβάλ Μπετόβεν στη Βόννη.
Ο Danfeng Shen παίζει σε ένα βιολί κατασκευής του Giovanni Battista Guadagnini το 1753, το οποίο του παραχωρήθηκε από το Ίδρυμα Έγχορδων Οργάνων MERITO. Η Antonia Rankersberger παίζει σε ένα βιολί του Camillo Camilli κατασκευής του 1736 στη Μάντοβα, το οποίο της παραχωρήθηκε από την Εθνική Τράπεζα της Αυστρίας.
