If the string quartet was the quintessential chamber music formation in past centuries, then perhaps in the 21st century, this role can be claimed for the saxophone quartet! The Madrid-based SIGMA Project, winner of the prestigious BBVA Foundation’s Leonardo Grant for Researchers and Musical Creators, is unquestionably much more than a mere saxophone quartet. Praised by the press as “the real Ardittis of the saxophone”, the SIGMA Project is a crucial conduit for the instrumental music of the 21st century, having performed more than 150 concerts in illustrious auditoriums and festivals across the world – extensively in the US and Europe, as well as in Buenos Aires (Teatro Colón), Bogotá (Teatro Mayor), Mexico City (Palacio de Bellas Artes), Santiago de Chile (Auditorio GAM), amongst others. For their debut in Cyprus, as part of the 15th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival, the SIGMA Project saxophone quartet will perform a unique programme of works by Iannis Xenakis, Salvatore Sciarrino, Mauricio Sotelo, Helga Arias, Jesús Torres, and a newly commissioned piece by the London-based Cypriot composer Effy Efthymiou. The concert is supported by a grant from Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) and is organised in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain.
Αν κατά τους περασμένους αιώνες, το κουαρτέτο εγχόρδων αποτελούσε την πεμπτουσία της μουσικής δωματίου, τότε ίσως αυτόν τον ρόλο να μπορεί να τον διεκδικήσει το κουαρτέτο σαξοφώνων για τον 21ο αιώνα! Έχοντας αποσπάσει την περίφημη υποτροφία Leonardo του Ιδρύματος BBVA για Ερευνητές και Μουσικούς Δημιουργούς, το SIGMA Project, με έδρα του τη Μαδρίτη, είναι αναμφίβολα πολλά περισσότερα από ένα απλό κουαρτέτο σαξοφώνων. Το Κουαρτέτο αποτελεί έναν ζωτικής σημασίας αγωγό για την ενόργανη μουσική του 21ου αιώνα, κι έχει επαινεθεί από τον διεθνή τύπο ως «οι πραγματικοί Arditti του σαξοφώνου». Το SIGMA Project έχει πραγματοποιήσει περισσότερες από 150 συναυλίες σε σημαντικές αίθουσες μουσικής και φεστιβάλ ανά το παγκόσμιο – εκτενώς στις ΗΠΑ και την Ευρώπη, καθώς και στο Μπουένος Άιρες (Θέατρο του Κολόμβου), Μπογκοτά (Θέατρο Σάντο Ντομίνγκο), Πόλη του Μεξικού (Παλάτι Καλών Τεχνών), Σαντιάγο της Χιλής (Κέντρο Γκαμπριέλα Μιστράλ), μεταξύ άλλων. Για το ντεμπούτο του στην Κύπρο, μέσα στο πλαίσιο του 15ου Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής, το SIGMA Project θα ερμηνεύσει ένα εντυπωσιακό πρόγραμμα με έργα των Ιάννη Ξενάκη, Σαλβατόρε Σιαρίνο, Μαουρίθιο Σοτέλο, Χέλγα Άριας, Χεσούς Τόρες, και την παγκόσμια πρεμιέρα ενός νέου έργου της βασισμένης στο Λονδίνο Κύπριας συνθέτριας Έφης Ευθυμίου. Η συναυλία στηρίζεται με επιχορήγηση από την Acción Cultural Española (AC/E) και διοργανώνεται σε συνεργασία με την Πρεσβεία της Ισπανίας.
