La Spagna Ensemble

Having taken its name from one of the most celebrated melodies of the Renaissance, La Spagna Ensemble was founded by Alejandro Marías in 2009, by bringing together some of the best and historically informed musicians of our times. With its flexible structure, La Spagna Ensemble is active in two dimensions: as a chamber music ensemble and as a baroque orchestra, performing opera and oratorio in collaboration with esteemed guest soloists and conductors.

La Spagna Ensemble’s repertoire spans from the Renaissance to early Romanticism, with occasional forays into 21st-century music, whilst its primary focus remains on the Baroque. This diversity is always guided by a single principle: to offer passionate, authentic and sincere interpretations that respect the historical and social context of each repertoire. After the release of their album A Tribute to Telemann, La Spagna with Alejandro Marías have recorded the opera omnia for viola da gamba by Jacques Morel – the first recording ever made of these works, over three centuries after their composition. The album received glowing reviews from the international press: “The performance is frankly superb, to the point that many, in a blind tasting, would call to mind the Jordi Savall of the glorious times” (Ritmo). Subsequently, they released the first-ever recording of Francisco A. Barbieri’s version of The Seven Last Words of Christ by Haydn (both on Brilliant Classics).

The Ensemble has appeared in some of the most prestigious concert venues and music festivals in Spain and abroad, more recently, at the Symphonic Hall of the Auditorio Nacional de Música, and The Palace of the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, Seville Festival de Música Antigua, Festival Internacional de Santander, International Festival of Sacred Art, Festival de Música Española of Cádiz. Upcoming engagements include a European tour and a collaborative project with contemporary composers aimed at creating new repertoire for period instruments.
