DANJULO ISHIZAKA cello

Born in Bonn into a German-Japanese family, Danjulo began playing the cello at the age of four. He studied at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, where he was significantly influenced by his teacher Boris Pergamenschikow. Other notable mentors included Tabea Zimmermann, Bernhard Greenhouse, and György Kurtág. His talent was evident early on, winning numerous prizes at international competitions, notably the Gaspar Cassado Competition in Spain and the Lutoslawski Competition in Warsaw.

Danjulo made his debut at age 17 at the Berlin Philharmonic Hall and has since performed at major venues, including the Musikverein in Vienna and Carnegie Hall in New York. He received personal mentorship from Mstislav Rostropovich, one of the last cellists to do so, and was praised for his technical ability and musical creativity. Participating in BBC Radio 3’s “New Generation Artists Scheme” allowed him to record extensively and perform at prestigious venues like Wigmore Hall in London. His debut CD with Sony BMG featured works by Britten, Franck, and Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, earning the Echo Klassik award. In 2012, he received the Hideo Saito Memorial Fund Award, and in 2014, his recording of the Schubert String Quintet with the Pavel Haas Quartet won the Gramophone Award for Chamber Music Recording of the Year.
