With its unique approach to music-making, the Kuss Quartet ranks amongst the world’s most renowned ensembles. The Quartet has been setting new standards for many years with its ambitious concept-based programming. Its mission is to offer exceptional experiences to traditional audiences and new listeners alike. Deep understanding of a work takes time to mature – that is self-evident for the Kuss Quartet; as is the courage, borne of personal discoveries, to develop their passion for experimentation. This is what the Kuss Quartet has stood for since the beginning of its professional career in 2002, when it was awarded the First Prize by the German Music Council and in the International String Quartet Competition “Premio Paolo Borciani”. The following year, the Quartet won the Borletti- Buitoni Award and were selected for the European Concert Hall Organisation’s ‘Rising Stars’ programme.

Kuss’ international career has taken them from New York’s Carnegie Hall to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw and Muziekgebouw, from London’s Wigmore Hall to Tokyo’s Suntory Hall back to the Philharmonie in Berlin, their home city. The Quartet has extensively toured in the USA, Australia, South America, and Japan, and has appeared at major festivals include the Paris Biennale, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, the Beethovenfest Bonn, Rheingau Musikfestival and the Edinburgh and Salzburg festivals, to name but a few.

In 2019, the Kuss Quartet was the first German string quartet to receive Stradivari’s legendary “Paganini Quartet” on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation. The Quartet played Beethoven’s complete string quartet cycle on these instruments, by invitation of the Suntory Hall, Tokyo. The live, recorded cycle was released by the British label Rubicon Classics with the support of G. Henle Verlag. The Quartet’s rich discography includes a number of highly acclaimed CDs, for Sony Classical, Onyx, Rubicon, EDA. In 2018, the Quartet received the Opus Klassik Prize, for their recording of works by Rudi Stephans, on the Sony label.

In terms of repertoire, the Kuss Quartet casts its net wide, ranging from the music of the Renaissance to compositions by Helmut Lachenmann, Aribert Reimann and György Kurtág, with whom the group has close contact. Thanks to a grant from the state of Lower Saxony and Musik 21, the Quartet has been able to commission several new works in the last ten years, expanding the string quartet repertoire with compositions by Enno Poppe, Aribert Reimann, Manfred Trojahn, Bruno Mantovani, Iris ter Schiphorst, Mark Andre, and Francisco Coll.

The Kuss Quartet enjoys further collaborations with artists such as Pierre-Laurant Aimard, Miklós Perényi, Dénes Várjon, Sarah Maria Sun, Maurice Steger, and Johannes Fischer, renowned actor Udo Samel, slam poet Bas Böttcher, dancers Yui Kawaguchi and Ruben Reniers, and director Nicola Hümpel and her music and dance theatre “Nico and The Navigators”.

Today, the Kuss Quartet inspires the next generation of chamber musicians in numerous international masterclasses. Furthermore, William Coleman and Oliver Wille hold professorships in Mozarteum Salzburg and Hanover/Birmingham respectively, while Mikayel Hakhnazaryan teaches chamber music at the Hochschule in Karlsruhe and Jana Kuss at the Accademia Perosi in Biella (Italy).
