Black Pencil ensemble

Black Pencil gave its debut concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 2010, and currently performs 80 to 100 concerts annually, with regular appearances at Europe’s leading concert halls, festivals, and contemporary music platforms, including Muziekgebouw Frits Philips in Eindhoven, Kunsthalle Erfurt, and BKA‑Theater Berlin. With concert tours reaching from Europe to Indonesia and South America, the ensemble has firmly established itself on the international stage.

To date, over 500 new works have been composed especially for Black Pencil, many of them premiered by the ensemble. Their repertoire boldly spans from early music to contemporary creations, bridging folk traditions, classical heritage, and experimental soundscapes. In addition to their concert work, Black Pencil is renowned for its interdisciplinary performances, combining music with visual arts, light installations, dance and theatre. These innovative projects create immersive experiences that challenge and captivate audiences.

Black Pencil’s rich discography, which has attracted attention for its original programming and distinctive concepts, includes albums such as Come Out, Caioni! (2021) and La Volta (2018), where early music meets contemporary creativity, as well as recent releases like Into Space, inspired by the land art of Flevoland, and Schokland, a project dedicated to the history and cultural legacy of the former island and UNESCO World Heritage site.
