In 2015, two talented pianists from opposite corners of the world, Emre Öztek from Cyprus and Chisato Kusunoki from Japan, met at the Summer International Piano School of Bromley Youth Music Trust, where they were tutors. The two virtuosos were united by their mutual love for the lesser-known piano repertoire and their passion for the magnificent repertoire for piano four-hands and two pianos. In 2021, the two musicians formed the ECKOduo, one of the most dynamic and innovative piano duos on the music scene today.
Emre Öztek began his piano lessons in Nicosia with Oskay Hoca. At 16, he moved to the USA, where he continued his piano education at Grinnell College under Dr. Patrice Ewoldt and Dr. Eugene Gaub. At Grinnell, he was awarded the Hill Award for Musical Excellence and the Curd Award for Outstanding Instrumentalists. He then received a scholarship to continue his studies at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Wisconsin, where he specialised in piano performance under Michael Kim, and went on to win numerous awards and competitions including the prestigious Commencement Concert Competition. Emre subsequently moved to London to pursue a Master’s degree in piano performance at Trinity College of Music under the guidance of professor Mikhail Kazakevich. During his studies, he performed in master-classes with renowned artists such as Claude Frank, Martino Tirimo, Deniz Arman Gelenbe, Douglas Finch, and Genevieve Lee. Emre Öztek has received international attention as a soloist and chamber musician – especially for his concert series all over Europe with his piano duo Con Fuoco with fellow pianist Harriet Stubbs, and the Larkhall Trio, which he formed in 2015, with violinist Roberta Cannas, and cellist Oda Matilda Lundin.
Chisato Kusunoki’s performances are highly regarded for their lyrical intensity and subtle virtuosity. The Times remarked on her “wonderfully fleet and supple fingers, quick to locate the music’s inner voices, able to dapple and perfume.” Chisato studied Music at University College, Oxford University where she graduated with the prestigious Gibbs Prize in Performance. Subsequently, she completed her postgraduate performance diploma with a distinction at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She studied under Nicholas Austin and Hamish Milne, and has also worked with Dmitri Bashkirov, Alexander Satz, Rosalyn Tureck and Ronald Stevenson. Chisato Kusunoki was a prize-winner at the Newport International Competition for Young Pianists in 2003. Active as a soloist and a chamber musician, with appearances in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including London’s South Bank Centre London and Wigmore Hall, Sumida Triphony Hall in Tokyo, and Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, she has been featured in BBC Radio 3 programme and has performed in highly acclaimed concerts alongside the Allegri String Quartet. Her extensive repertoire ranges from the earliest keyboard masterpieces to contemporary works, and she enjoys exploring lesser-known works, particularly of the late romantic period. A Steinway artist, Chisato has made a special research on the music of Nikolai Medtner, on which she has worked closely with Hamish Milne. She has also collaborated with several leading composers such as Ronald Stevenson, David Hackbridge Johnson, Justin Connolly and Murad Kazhlaev, whose works she has premiered in concert and in recordings. Her recordings are available on Quartz and Naxos labels.
