Giovanni Bertolazzi

Giovanni Bertolazzi made his mark on the international music scene when, in 2021, he won not only the Second Prize but also an impressive five special prizes at the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition in Budapest! This significant achievement came after winning more than 40 important prizes in international piano competitions, including the Ferrucio Busoni in Bolzano, the Thalberg in Naples, and the Alkan Award for Piano Virtuosity in Milan.

Bertolazzi has performed with leading orchestras, amongst others, the Hungarian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra del Teatro La Fenice, the Orchestra del Teatro Bellini, the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana, and he has appeared in major venues all over Italy and abroad, including Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence), Teatro La Fenice (Venice), Sala Verdi (Milan), Teatro Ponchielli (Cremona), Teatro Politeama Garibaldi (Palermo), Palazzo del Quirinale in Rome, Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum (Budapest), Église de Verbier, Castleton Theatre House in Virginia (USA).

He has been a guest of prestigious series and festivals such as the Verbier Festival, in where he was awarded the Tabor Foundation Award, Lorin Maazel’s Castleton Festival in Virginia (USA), Liszt-Festival in Schillingsfürst, Zoltán Kocsis Festival and Cziffra Festival in Hungary, and in Italy, Bologna Festival, Accademia Filarmonica of Verona, Società del Quartetto in Milan, Amici della Musica of Padua and of Florence. In 2023, Giovanni Bertolazzi received LacMus Festival’s Donna Guglielmina Durini Litta International Piano Award in Milan.

Giovanni Bertolazzi is artistically supported by The Keyboard Charitable Trust (London). He officially performed on the world’s longest concert-grand piano during his first public presentation, the Borgato Grand-Prix 333 (3.33 metres long). On this extraordinary instrument, he recorded two albums dedicated entirely to music by Franz Liszt and published by the Borgato Collection. These recordings have received several accolades, including the Supersonic Pizzicato Award, 5 Stars from Musica Magazine, nomination at the International Classical Music Awards. In 2024, he was awarded the 43rd Liszt Ferenc International Grand Prix Du Disque by the Liszt Society of Budapest for his recordings. Reviewing Bertolazzi’s albums, the authoritative music critic Bryce Morrison wrote in The Art of Pianists: “Bertolazzi is a clear possessor of talent, something that blazes out with a communicative force (though also with poetic delicacy) that rivets your attention”. Giovanni’s concerts and recordings have been broadcast by Radio France Musique, Bartók Rádió, Rai Radio3, Radio Romania Muzical.

Born in Verona in 1998, Giovanni Bertolazzi graduated from the Conservatory of Venice under the guidance of Massimo Somenzi, and he continued his studies at the Conservatory of Catania with Epifanio Comis, graduating in Piano Performance and Chamber Music with top honours. Nowadays, Bertolazzi holds a main piano chair at the G. Frescobaldi Conservatory of Music in Ferrara. Since 2023, he has been holding masterclasses at the University of Debrecen (Hungary), as part of the YMSA – Young Musicians’ Summer Academy.
