Percussionist Marios Nicolaou has been carving a long and interesting career as a soloist, chamber musicians and orchestral player. He is the principal Timpanist of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a Timpanist with the Ballet Orchestra of the National Greek Opera and has collaborated with the Athens State Orchestra, the National Radio Symphony Orchestra (ERT), the Athens Camerata, Gürzenich-Orchester Kölner Philharmoniker, and Stadtsorchester Hannover, amongst many others.
As a chamber musician, Marios has collaborated with a number of renowned composers, conductors, and ensembles, including, Helmut Lachenmann, Péter Eötvös, Franck Ollu, Denys Bouliane, Kasper de Roo, Theodore Antoniou, Ensemble Nue Music Köln, the Greek Composers’ Union Ensemble, Ensemble dissonArt and the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble. He has participated in international festivals such as Klangspuren, Pierre Boulez zum ’75, Klavier Festival Ruhr, Minimal Music Kassel, Athens and Epidaurus Festival, and he is the founder of the Cyprus Percussion Ensemble, and co-founder of the Ergon Ensemble (Athens) and the Cronos Ensemble.
Notable performances as a soloist include the Concertino for Timpani Percussion and Strings by Andrzej Panufnik, the Concerto pour batterie et petit orchestre by Darius Milhaud, Nikos Skalkottas’ Characteristic Piece “Nocturnal Amusement” and the Partita for 6 Timpani and Orchestra by Georg Druschetzky.
Born in Limassol, Marios Nicolaou studied percussion at the Athens Conservatory and at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. He has been a holder of “Alexandra Trianti” scholarship of The Friends of Music Society in Athens Megaron. He is a Marimba One and JG mallets artist.

Ως μουσικός δωματίου, ο Μάριος έχει συνεργαστεί με διεθνούς φήμης συνθέτες, μαέστρους και σύνολα μουσικής, συμπεριλαμβανομένων, Χέλμουτ Λάχενμαν, Πίτερ Έοτβος, Φρανκ Όλλου, Ντένις Μπούλιαν, Κάσπερ ντε Ρου, Θεόδωρο Αντωνίου, Ensemble Nue Music Κολωνίας, Σύνολο Ένωσης Ελλήνων Μουσουργών, Ensemble dissonArt και Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε φεστιβάλ όπως Klangspuren, Pierre Boulez zum ’75, Klavier Festival του Ρουρ, Μινιμαλιστικής Μουσικής στο Κάσσελ, Φεστιβάλ Αθηνών και Επιδαύρου, και είναι ιδρυτής του Cyprus Percussion Group, ιδρυτικό μέλος του Ergon Ensemble (Αθήνα) και του συνόλου Chronos.
Αξιοσημείωτες εμφανίσεις του ως σολίστ περιλαμβάνουν το Κοντσερτίνο για Τύμπανα, Κρουστά και Έγχορδα του Άντζεϊ Πανούφνικ, το Concerto pour batterie et petit orchestre του Ντάριους Μιγιώ, το Χαρακτηριστικό Κομμάτι «Νυκτερινή Διασκέδασις» για Ξυλόφωνο και Ορχήστρα του Νίκου Σκαλκώτα και την Παρτίτα για 6 Τύμπανα του Γκέοργκ Ντρουσέτσκι.
Γεννημένος στη Λεμεσό, ο Μάριος Νικολάου σπούδασε κρουστά στο Ωδείο Αθηνών και στην Ανώτατη Μουσική Σχολή της Κολωνίας. Υπήρξε υπότροφος του συλλόγου Φίλοι της Μουσικής του Μεγάρου Μουσικής Αθηνών – υποτροφία «Αλεξάνδρα Τριάντη». Ο Μάριος είναι καλλιτέχνης της Marimba One και των JG Timpani mallets.
