Like every year, the Pharos Arts Foundation opens its Fall season with a new edition of the International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival. Reflecting the Foundation’s deep commitment to music creativity and innovation, this was the first festival of new music ever to be established in Cyprus, and since its early days, it has been recognized as one of the most innovative annual events in Europe. For over a decade, the International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival has been decisive in acquainting the general audience of Cyprus with the music of our times, while it has served as an important platform for composers to collaborate with some of the most eminent soloists and ensembles in the world. The Pharos Contemporary has presented dozens of world premieres, but also numerous Cyprus premieres of neglected masterpieces of the 20^th century as well as works by the new generation of composers.

Όπως κάθε χρόνο, το Ίδρυμα Τεχνών Φάρος ανοίγει τη Φθινοπωρινή του σαιζόν με το Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος. Φανερώνοντας τη βαθιά αφοσίωση του Ιδρύματος στη δημιουργικότητα και τη μουσική καινοτομία, πρόκειται για το πρώτο φεστιβάλ νέας μουσικής που θεσπίστηκε ποτέ στην Κύπρο, και το οποίο αναγνωρίσθηκε από το ξεκίνημά του ως ένας από τους πιο πρωτοποριακούς ετήσιους θεσμούς στην Ευρώπη. Για πάνω από μια δεκαετία, το Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος έχει διαδραματίσει καθοριστικό ρόλο στην εξοικείωση του φιλόμουσου κοινού της Κύπρου με τη μουσική των καιρών μας, ενώ παράλληλα αποτελεί μια σημαντική πλατφόρμα πάνω στην οποία συνθέτες καλούνται να συνεργαστούν με ορισμένους από τους πιο επιφανείς σολίστ και σύνολα μουσικής ανά το παγκόσμιο. Το Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος έχει παρουσιάσει δεκάδες έργα σε πρώτη παγκόσμια εκτέλεση, ενώ έχει προβάλει σε πρώτη Παγκύπρια εκτέλεση αναρίθμητα αριστουργήματα του 20ου αιώνα τα οποία ήταν μέχρι πρότινος παραμελημένα, καθώς και πρεμιέρες έργων της νέας γενιάς συνθετών.

The 2022 edition

of International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival

Organised from 5 until 14 October 2022 at The Shoe Factory in Nicosia, the 13th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival presents four distinct and exciting concerts, alongside an array of ground-breaking interdisciplinary events, such as lectures, workshops, and educational activities for the youth. All concerts start at 8:30pm.

The Festival will open on Wednesday 5 October with a concert from the internationally acclaimed Fidelio Trio. Praised for their “fine performances… leavened with lyricism and compassion…” the Fidelio Trio are enthusiastic champions of the piano trio genre, performing the widest possible range of repertoire on concert stages across the world. Shortlisted for the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, the Fidelios have an impressive list of commissions and first performances from the leading composers of our time, and boast a large discography of highly acclaimed recordings. For their Cyprus debut, the Fidelio Trio will perform works Gabriel Faurè, Sofia Gubaidulina, David Fennessy, and Judith Weir.

The second concert of 13th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival, on Friday 7 October, is a rare and remarkably captivating event since it presents for the first time in Cyprus the Dutch pan-flute virtuoso Matthijs Koene. Internationally recognised as one of the foremost panpipes players of our time, Koene is celebrated for his ground-breaking vision and approach, which have vastly expanded the technical and expressive capabilities of this ancient instrument, and introduced it to the classical music world. With a repertoire spanning from the early Renaissance to the 21st-century, Matthijs Koene has inspired numerous composers to write pieces for panpipes, and has received several awards, including the Vriendenkrans Prize from the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and a Diapason d’ Or. For his recital in Nicosia, which is supported by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Cyprus, Matthijs Koene will perform works by Claude Debussy, Steve Reich, Calliope Tsoupaki, Evis Sammoutis, Ron Ford, Roderik de Man and Daan Manneke.

The Ergon Ensemble – one of the leading Greek ensembles of contemporary music – returns to The Shoe Factory on Wednesday 12 October 2022 for a concert dedicated to the great pioneer of 20th century music, Iannis Xenakis, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth. An explorer of the furthest frontiers of music, architecture and thought, Greek composer, music theorist, mathematician, and architect Iannis Xenakis is commonly recognised as one of the most important post-war avant-garde figures. His dazzling mathematical constructions changed the face of music forever, and his organic structures lent poetry to post-war architecture. Shimmering strings, thundering percussion, heartfelt voices stemming from his inimitable imagery, while his daring imagination empowered audiences and musicians with a passion born out of a tumultuous and traumatic life. This fascinating concert exploring Xenakis’ smaller and lesser-known works is kindly supported by the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus.

The 13th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival is concluded on Friday 14 October with the exciting sounds of Trio Zukan – one of the most notable and experimental ensembles of the contemporary music scene in the Basque Country, which has emerged from the combination of three uncommon instruments: accordion, percussion and txistu (traditional Basque flute that can be played with one hand, leaving the other one free to play a percussion instrument). The concert, which is supported by the Embassy of Spain in Cyprus, will include works by Salvatore Sciarrino, Georges Aperghis, Evis Sammoutis, María Eugenia Luc, Francisco Dominguez and Mikel Chamizo.

Το 13ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος διοργανώνεται από τις 5 μέχρι τις 14 Οκτωβρίου 2022, στο The Shoe Factory στη Λευκωσία, και φιλοξενεί τέσσερις συναρπαστικές συναυλίες, παράλληλα με μια σειρά καινοτόμων διεπιστημονικών εκδηλώσεων, όπως εργαστήρια μουσικής, διαλέξεις, και εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες για τη νεολαία. Όλες οι συναυλίες ξεκινούν στις 8:30μμ.

Το Φεστιβάλ σηκώνει αυλαία την Τετάρτη 5 Οκτωβρίου με μια συναυλία από το διεθνούς φήμης Fidelio Trio. Έχοντας επευφημηθεί για τις «έξοχες ερμηνείες του… ζυμωμένες με λυρικότητα και ευαισθησία…» το Fidelio Trio είναι ενθουσιώδης υπέρμαχος της τεχνοτροπίας του τρίο για πιάνο, με ερμηνείες στις σημαντικότερες αίθουσες ανά το παγκόσμιο σε ένα τεράστιο φάσμα ρεπερτορίου. Φιναλίστ στα Μουσικά Βραβεία της Βασιλικής Φιλαρμονικής Εταιρείας το 2016, το Τρίο απαριθμεί έναν τεράστιο κατάλογο από αναθέσεις και πρώτες εκτελέσεις έργων των κορυφαίων συνθετών της εποχής μας, ενώ διαθέτει μια εντυπωσιακή και αξιοσημείωτη δισκογραφία. Για το ντεμπούτο του στην Κύπρο, το Fidelio Trio θα ερμηνεύσει έργα των Γκαμπριέλ Φορέ, Σοφία Γκουμπαϊντούλινα, David Fennessy, και Judith Weir.

Σπάνια και άκρως ενδιαφέρουσα είναι η δεύτερη συναυλία του 13ου Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος, την Παρασκευή 7 Οκτωβρίου, μιας και φιλοξενεί για πρώτη φορά στην Κύπρο τον Ολλανδό πανφλαουτίστα βιρτουόζο Matthijs Koene. Διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένος ως ένας από τους κορυφαίους δεξιοτέχνες του πανφλάουτου, ο Matthijs Koene φημίζεται τόσο για το όραμα όσο και για την πρωτοποριακή του προσέγγιση – στοιχεία που έχουν διευρύνει σε μεγάλο βαθμό τις τεχνικές και εκφραστικές δυνατότητες αυτού του αρχαίου οργάνου, και το εισήγαγαν στον κόσμο της κλασικής μουσικής. Με ρεπερτόριο που εκτείνεται από την πρώιμη Αναγέννηση έως τον 21ο αιώνα, ο Koene έχει εμπνεύσει αμέτρητους συνθέτες να γράψουν κομμάτια για το πανφλάουτο, και έχει τιμηθεί με βραβεία όπως Vriendenkrans του Κοντσερτγκεμπάου και Diapason d’ Or. Για το ρεσιτάλ του στη Λευκωσία, το οποίο στηρίζει η Πρεσβεία της Ολλανδίας στην Κύπρο, ο Matthijs Koene θα ερμηνεύσει έργα των Κλοντ Ντεμπισί, Στιβ Ράιχ, Καλλιόπης Τσουπάκη, Εύη Σαμμούτη, Ron Ford, Roderik de Man και Daan Manneke.

Το κορυφαίο ελληνικό σύνολο σύγχρονης μουσικής Ergon Ensemble επιστρέφει στο The Shoe Factory, την Τετάρτη 12 Οκτωβρίου 2022, για μια συναυλία – αφιέρωμα στον μεγάλο πρωτοπόρο συνθέτη του 20ου αιώνα, Ιάννη Ξενάκη, με αφορμή την επέτειο των 100 χρόνων από τη γέννησή του. Ερευνητής που ξεπέρασε τα σύνορα της μουσικής, της αρχιτεκτονικής και του στοχασμού, ο Έλληνας συνθέτης, μουσικοθεωρητικός, μαθηματικός και αρχιτέκτονας Ιάννης Ξενάκης έχει αναγνωρισθεί διεθνώς ως μια από τις σημαντικότερες μορφές της μεταπολεμικής σύγχρονης τέχνης. Οι εκπληκτικές μαθηματικές του κατασκευές άλλαξαν την έκφραση της μουσικής για πάντα, και οι οργανικές του δομές έδωσαν ποιητική υπόσταση στη μεταπολεμική αρχιτεκτονική. Από τον ανεπανάληπτο κόσμο του Ξενάκη ανακύπτουν απαστράπτοντα έγχορδα, εκκωφαντικά κρουστά, ανυπόκριτες φωνές, και μια τολμηρή φαντασία που έχει εμφυσήσει τόσο στους ακροατές όσο και στους μουσικούς το πάθος που γέννησε η ταραχώδης και τραυματική ζωή του. Αυτή τη συγκλονιστική συναυλία που αναδιφά στα λιγότερο γνωστά έργα του Ξενάκη, στηρίζει η Πρεσβεία της Ελλάδος στην Κύπρο.

Το 13ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος ολοκληρώνεται την Παρασκευή 14 Οκτωβρίου με ήχους συναρπαστικούς και ασυνήθιστους από το Trio Zukan – ενός εκ των πιο διακεκριμένων και πειραματικών συνόλων σύγχρονης μουσικής στη Χώρα των Βάσκων, το οποίο προέκυψε από τον σπάνιο συνδυασμό τριών οργάνων: ακορντεόν, κρουστών και του txistu – ενός είδους παραδοσιακού βασκικού φλάουτου τριών οπών, το οποίο μπορεί να παιχτεί με το ένα χέρι, αφήνοντας το άλλο χέρι ελεύθερο για να παίξει κρουστά. Η συναυλία, την οποία στηρίζει η Πρεσβεία της Ισπανίας στην Κύπρο, θα περιλαμβάνει έργα των Salvatore Sciarrino, Γιώργου Απέργη, Εύη Σαμμούτη, María Eugenia Luc, Francisco Dominguez και Mikel Chamizo.
