As pioneers of contemporary music in Cyprus, the International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival has consistently pushed the boundaries of creativity and innovation. Since its inception, it has been recognised as one of Europe’s most ground-breaking annual events. For 14 years, the Festival has introduced Cyprus audiences to the ever-evolving world of contemporary music, providing a crucial platform for composers to collaborate with world-renowned soloists and ensembles. The Pharos Contemporary Music Festival has been a hub for presenting world premieres and introducing neglected 20th-century masterpieces, as well as works by the new generation of composers.

Ως πρωτοπόρος της σύγχρονης μουσικής στην Κύπρο, το Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος έχει συστηματικά υπερπηδήσει τα όρια της δημιουργικότητας και της καινοτομίας. Από το ξεκίνημά του, έχει αναγνωριστεί ως μία από τις πιο πρωτοποριακές εκδηλώσεις που πραγματοποιούνται κάθε χρόνο στην Ευρώπη. Για 14 χρόνια, το Φεστιβάλ έχει διαδραματίσει καθοριστικό ρόλο στην εξοικείωση του φιλόμουσου κοινού της Κύπρου με τη μουσική των καιρών μας, προσφέροντας παράλληλα μια σημαντική πλατφόρμα πάνω στην οποία συνθέτες καλούνται να συνεργαστούν με ορισμένους από τους πιο επιφανείς σολίστ και σύνολα μουσικής ανά το παγκόσμιο. Το Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος έχει καταστεί κομβικό σταυροδρόμι για την παρουσίαση έργων σε πρώτη παγκόσμια εκτέλεση, αριστουργημάτων του 20ου αιώνα που μέχρι πρότινος βρίσκονταν στην αφάνεια, καθώς και έργων από τη νέα γενιά συνθετών.

The 2023 edition

of International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival

As the International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival continues to redefine the cultural landscape of Cyprus, this year’s edition is certain to be an extraordinary sonic journey. Organised from 4 until 13 October 2023 at The Shoe Factory in Nicosia, the 14th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival will present five distinct and exciting concerts, alongside an array of ground-breaking interdisciplinary events, such as lectures, workshops, and educational activities for the youth.

The Festival opens with violinist Peter Sheppard Skærved and pianist Roderick Chadwick for a fascinating programme of imaginative works inspired by the birds. The works they are performing range from the brilliant circle of Bird Portraits by Edward Cowie, through to works by Olivier Messiaen and Robert Saxton, and reach back to the 1600s, when composers across, like Heinrich Biber, were fascinated with birdsong. The second concert of the Festival welcomes the Cyprus debut of one of the most important ensembles of our times, the Brussels-based Ictus Ensemble who will join forces with the fervent voice of the young soprano Soetkin Elbers for a programme inspired by hymns, ancient and modern, intersecting the 9th century hymns of Saint Kassiani of Constantinople with works by John Cage, Dmitri Shostakovich, Salvatore Sciarrino, Michael Pisaro, Tarquinio Merula, Filippo Perocco, James Tenney. Surprising, unheard-of sounds will be the focus of the third Festival concert as it presents a rare, 45-minute performance by the talented and uniquely resourceful Passepartout Duo – comprising pianist Nicoletta Favari and percussionist Christopher Salvito. The two musicians are continually reassessing the tools they use in order to create their music, and they are developing a specialised and evolving ecosystem of handmade musical instruments. The centrepiece of their performance is the Chromaplane, a new electronic instrument the Passepartout Duo have developed over the past year. A few days later, the celebrated Neue Vocalsolisten return to The Shoe Factory after ten years for another yet memorable concert. Vocalsolisten have been instrumental in shaping the genre of vocal chamber music theatre, with hundreds of works having been composed especially for them, and with collaborations with other top-class specialist ensembles and orchestras, international opera houses, independent theatre scenes, electronic studios, important festivals and concert series of new music all over the world. In Cyprus, they will join forces with the leading clarinettist Gareth Davis to deliver a programme of electrifying, vibrant and dramatic works by Georges Aperghis, Evis Sammoutis, Zeynep Gedizlioglu and Carola Bauckholt. The concert is kindly supported by the Goethe-Institut Zypern. The 14th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival concludes with the debut in Cyprus of the renowned Greek pianist, Pavlos Antoniadis. Collaborator of the team interaction-son-musique-mouvement at IRCAM, Antoniadis has collaborated with some of the most important composers of our time. For his recital, Antoniadis will perform an impressive programme of works by François-Bernard Mâche, Iannis Xenakis, Maria Kaoutzani, Hakki Cengiz Eren, Leoš Janáček, and Galina Ustvolskaya.

Καθώς το Φεστιβάλ συνεχίζει να διαμορφώνει το πολιτιστικό τοπίο της Κύπρου, η φετινή του έκδοση αναμφισβήτητα θα αποτελέσει ένα θεσπέσιο ηχητικό ταξίδι. Το 14ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος διοργανώνεται από τις 4 μέχρι τις 13 Οκτωβρίου 2023, στο The Shoe Factory στη Λευκωσία, και φιλοξενεί πέντε συναρπαστικές συναυλίες, παράλληλα με μια σειρά καινοτόμων διεπιστημονικών εκδηλώσεων, όπως εργαστήρια μουσικής, διαλέξεις, και εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες για τη νεολαία.

Το Φεστιβάλ ανοίγει με τον βιολονίστα Peter Sheppard Skærved και τον πιανίστα Roderick Chadwick σε ένα συναρπαστικό πρόγραμμα ευφάνταστων έργων εμπνευσμένων από τον κόσμο των πουλιών. Το πρόγραμμά τους περιλαμβάνει τον θαυμάσιο κύκλο Bird Portraits (Πορτραίτα Πουλιών) του Edward Cowie, έργα των Ολιβιέ Μεσιάν και Robert Saxton και εκτείνεται πίσω στο 1600, όταν συνθέτες όπως ο Heinrich Biber σαγηνεύονταν από το κελάηδημα των πουλιών. Η δεύτερη συναυλία του Φεστιβάλ σηματοδοτεί το ντεμπούτο στην Κύπρο ενός εκ των πιο φημισμένων μουσικών συνόλων της εποχής μας, του Ictus Ensemble εκ Βρυξελλών, το οποίο θα ενώσει τις δυνάμεις του με τη ζεστή φωνής της νεαρής σοπράνο Soetkin Elbers για ένα πρόγραμμα που είναι εμπνευσμένο από ύμνους, αρχαίους και μοντέρνους, αντιπαραβάλλοντας τους ύμνους της Οσίας Κασσιανής της Κωνσταντινούπολης από τον 9ο αιώνα με έργα των John Cage, Dmitri Shostakovich, Salvatore Sciarrino, Michael Pisaro, Tarquinio Merula, Filippo Perocco, James Tenney. Απροσδόκητοι, πρωτάκουστοι ήχοι θα είναι το επίκεντρο της τρίτης συναυλίας του Φεστιβάλ καθώς θα παρουσιάσει μια 45-λεπτη περφόρμανς από το ταλαντούχο και απαράμιλλα επινοητικό Passepartout Duo – που αποτελείται από την πιανίστρια Nicoletta Favari και τον κρουστό Christopher Salvito. Οι δύο μουσικοί επαναξιολογούν συνεχώς τα εργαλεία που χρησιμοποιούν για τη δημιουργία της μουσικής τους, έχοντας αναπτύξει ένα εξειδικευμένο και συνεχώς εξελισσόμενο οικοσύστημα χειροποίητων μουσικών οργάνων. Το κεντρικό στοιχείο της περφόρμανς τους είναι το Chromaplane, ένα νέο ηλεκτρονικό όργανο που έχουν αναπτύξει οι Passepartout Duo κατά τη διάρκεια της περασμένης χρονιάς. Λίγες μέρες αργότερα, οι διεθνούς φήμης Neue Vocalsolisten επιστρέφουν στο The Shoe Factory έπειτα από δέκα χρόνια για μια ακόμα αξέχαστη συναυλία. Οι Vocalsolisten συνέβαλαν καθοριστικά στη διαμόρφωση της τεχνοτροπίας της φωνητικής θεατρικής μουσικής δωματίου, με εκατοντάδες έργα να έχουν γραφτεί ειδικά για αυτούς, και με συνεργασίες με άλλα κορυφαία εξειδικευμένα σύνολα και ορχήστρες, διεθνείς λυρικές σκηνές, καθώς και ανεξάρτητες θεατρικές σκηνές, ηλεκτρονικά στούντιο, σημαντικά φεστιβάλ και σειρές συναυλιών νέας μουσικής σε όλο τον κόσμο. Στην Κύπρο, θα συμπράξουν με τον κορυφαίο κλαρινετίστα Gareth Davis, για να ερμηνεύσουν ένα πρόγραμμα με συναρπαστικά, γλαφυρά και δραματικά έργα των Ζωρζ Απέργη, Εύη Σαμμούτη, Zeynep Gedizlioglu και Carola Bauckholt. Τη συναυλία στηρίζει το Ινστιτούτο Γκαίτε Κύπρου. Το 14^ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Φάρος ολοκληρώνεται με το ντεμπούτο στην Κύπρο του εξέχοντα Έλληνα πιανίστα, Παύλου Αντωνιάδη. Συνεργάτης της ομάδας διάδραση-ήχος-μουσική-κίνηση στο IRCAM στο Παρίσι, ο Αντωνιάδης έχει συνεργαστεί με ορισμένους από τους πιο επιφανείς συνθέτες της εποχής μας. Για το ρεσιτάλ του στο The Shoe Factory, θα ερμηνεύσει ένα εντυπωσιακό πρόγραμμα με έργα των François-Bernard Mâche, Ιάννη Ξενάκη, Μαρίας Καουτζάνη, Hakki Cengiz Eren, Leoš Janáček, και Galina Ustvolskaya.
